On 25th April, thousands of people were injured and thousands more lost their lives in a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Kathmandu, Nepal and it's surrounding areas.
More than 2,000 died in Sindhupalchok. In the capital, Kathmandu, more than 1,000 perished. Thousands more were badly injured by the things falling over caused by the quake or powerful aftershocks that rocked the region. Mount Everest was also struck by deadly avalanches after the quake on 25 April.
People are living in makeshifts camps ever since the quake that made them homeless or because they were just too afraid to stay inside. Feared from unexpected aftershocks, some tried to leave the capital.
The United Nations, which estimates 6.6 million people live in the districts affected by the earthquake, is helping to co-ordinate rescue efforts. The British organisation, Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters has sent a team of experts with 1.5 tonnes of specialist equipment. Including an electrical power generator and power tools for cutting through concrete and steel.
They will not be a drain on local resources because they have their own tents and food supplies. Other countries including India & China are sending teams of rescuers.
Although this might seem enough, I think that we could do so much more. What I was thinking of was a school trip to Nepal.
I think that if our school planned an educational school trip to Nepal, us as students can learn many things. We could give out food, shelter and some clothing for the people in need. I really want to help Nepal. We'll learn to appreciate things, respect people and so much more.
Previously, there was a flood in Kelantan, Malaysia. My dad organised for his company and my uncle's old boarding school mates to join and help the people to clean their stuff that got mud all over. It was a really fun and educational experience for me because I learnt to appreciate the things I have and I also met a friend there, which is nice to meet someone through these kinds of things.
I think we could do the same for Nepal, as a school. We can make new friendships, have fun and help people at the same time. I really want to help Nepal.
