STEREOTYPES

Stereotypes have been present in society for a very long time. There are stereotypes about nearly everything in our world. From genders to nations, we can always find at least one stereotype about that issue.

First off, what is a stereotype? Basically, a stereotype is a per-conceived idea about something or a group of people that isn’t necessarily true. An example of a stereotype is “blonde girls are dumb”. I’m sure there are some blonde girls out there who are dumb, however not all of them are. This is untrue, yet it shows up in society so often because people have that per-conceived idea.

More serious stereotypes would be gender and race ones. For example, “boys can’t cry”, “girls like shopping” and “black people are all criminals”. These are utterly untrue and quite frankly, they’re ridiculous. A boy can cry, tons of girls hate shopping and criminals come from all kinds of ethnic backgrounds.

You might think that stereotypes aren’t a big problem in our world. You would be wrong. People are made fun of everyday for challenging and/or reversing these stereotypes. They’re seen as weird, different and outcasts. On a global scale, stereotypes affect the law, politics and so many other things. Black people are wrongfully arrested far more than white people are. This is because police officers and witnessed have stereotypes. People think that if a black man is parked outside of a grocery store, he’s going to rob it, but if a white man does that exact same thing, he’s only waiting for someone.

We must get rid of negative stereotypes such as those mentioned above. They are a nuisance and they are stupid. As a society, we must work together to make out thoughts as positive as possible be it about gender issues, racial issues or anything else.

Thanks for reading! :)
